The Honorable Judge Edmund Sargus presents on Drummond on February 4th, 6:00 p.m.

The Honorable Judge Edmund Sargus, an Article III Federal Judge for the United States District Court of the Southern District of Ohio will describe the life of Thomas Drummond, a Civil War hero, state senator and newspaper editor. An outspoken opponent of slavery, Drummond was selected as age 23 to be a delegate to the 1st Republican National Convention in 1856, where he met Abraham Lincoln.  When Lincoln was elected president four years later, he commissioned Drummond as an officer in the 5th U.S. Cavalry before the Civil War began.  For the next four years, Drummond saw nearly constant combat, serving at Bull Run, Antietam, Brandy Station, Gettysburg and Falling Waters.  On April 1st, 1865, Drummond commanded the entire 5th Cavalry at the decisive Battle of Five Forks, which eight days later resulted in the Confederate surrender of Appomattox.  In the course of the massive cavalry charge, Drummond was mortally wounded.  At his dying request, he was buried next to his mother in the St. Clairsville's Methodist Cemetery.
